Fly-ing High

UFC 315 was a showcase for the women’s flyweight division.

While Valentina Shevchenko maintained the status quo at the top of the weight class with a hard-fought unanimous decision triumph over top contender Manon Fiorot, perhaps no one improved their stock more than Natalia Silva. The 28-year-old Brazilian frustrated ex-champ Alexa Grasso for three rounds with movement and speed, cruising to a three-round verdict and her 13th straight professional triumph. Seven of those victories have come inside the Octagon, and with names like Grasso, Jessica Andrade, Viviane Araujo and Jasmine Jasudavicius on her resume, Silva appears to be a serious title contender. For now, she climbs all the way to second in the latest flyweight poll.

Speaking of Jasudavicius, the 36-year-old Canadian has also been making noise at 125 pounds. The Niagara Top Team representative won her fourth straight flyweight bout (and fifth in a row overall) in dominant fashion on Saturday, submitting Andrade with a rear-naked choke 2:40 into the opening stanza of their preliminary clash. That hot streak allows Jasudavicius to move to No. 10 in the latest flyweight rankings.

Elsewhere, Jack Della Maddalena restructured the welterweight rankings, moving from seventh to first with a unanimous decision triumph over Belal Muhammad in the UFC 315 headliner. Della Maddalena may seem like an unlikely champion, but the improvement he showed against “Remember the Name” bodes well for his future. A showdown with lightweight title holder Islam Makhachev looms large in the coming months.

Finally, Ye Ji Lee pulled off an upset at atomweight when she defeated Saori Oshima via unanimous decision at Deep 125 Impact last Monday. Despite having a losing overall record, the 25-year-old South Korean has won three of her last four outings and could be a talent to watch going forward. Her latest effort allows her to make her Top 10 debut at No. 8, one spot ahead of her vanquished foe.
